During the summer of 2010, PDX Summer School tutored 3 students from Mill Park Elementary. The students were chosen on teacher referral and were students who were most at risk for Summer Slide – they had low reading and math scores, speak a language other than English in their home, and live close to the school in low-income housing.
In 2011, our program moved over to Harrison Park School in the Portland Public School District and we grew to serve 32 students taught by 4 teachers. We happily partnered with Impact Northwest’s SUN program, which helped us secure classrooms, transportation, and food service for our students.
PDX Summer School will increase to tutor 60 low income, ELL students from Harrison Park in 2012. We will be hiring 5 teachers in addition to 1 principal. We are excited to be expanding and serving more students!
Here is what others have to say about our program:
“It was nice learning things in the summer other than watching TV all summer long.” ~ A 5th grade student who attended PDX Summer School in 2010
“The students who attended PDX Summer School were prepared to learn on the first day of school, familiar with concepts of print, and able to select appropriate level texts.” ~ Carla Bunting, 5th grade teacher at Mill Park Elementary
“When I meet with [the student], he will read with me for long periods of time. It is quite different than when I first met him.” ~ Tonya Parsons, Director of the Community Homework Club through Human Solutions
